What is a dental veneer?
A dental veneer is a thin layer of tooth-coloured material that is put onto the front of the tooth to improve its appearance. They are normally used when a tooth has become badly discoloured or been damaged by decay or accident.
What is involved?
The dentist will need to remove a very thin layer of your natural tooth. This is so that the veneer can be fitted without the tooth looking or feeling bulky. The dentist will then make a mould using a putty-like material. A dental technician will use this mould to make the veneer to the exact size and shape needed.
When the veneer – which is usually made out of porcelain – is ready, the dentist will glue it to the surface of the tooth.
Some veneers are built up directly on the tooth using the same material that is used for white fillings. The surface of the tooth will first be roughened with a mild acid and then layers of the filling material are applied until the tooth has the desired look and feel.
