Anything that increases the risk of getting a disease is called a risk factor.

Having one or more of the following risk factors doesn’t mean that you will definitely get breast cancer. Many people who have these factors never get it and some people with no risk factors develop it.

Every woman wants to know what she can do to lower her risk of breast cancer. Some of the factors associated with breast cancer — being a woman, your age, and your genetics, for example — can’t be changed. Other factors — being overweight, lack of exercise, smoking cigarettes, and eating unhealthy food — can be changed by making choices. By choosing the healthiest lifestyle options possible, you can empower yourself and make sure your breast cancer risk is as low as possible.

Some of the known risk factors for breast cancer are listed below. However, there are other risks not listed, and some people may develop the disease who do not show any risk factors.

It is vital that we look after our bodies and that we try and reduce any risk by looking at our lifestyle. Check your breasts regularly for abnormalities and if in any doubt make an appointment with a GP for a check-up.
