Ever wondered what it is like and what is involved when you have cosmetic surgery with Medcare? Here, one of our patients describes her experience of having a tummy tuck.
To start I had a free consultation at the clinic to find out the cost and details of having an abdominoplasty.
I was seen by Dr Teresa Bernabeu the consultant plastic surgeon at the clinic. She was able to diagnose exactly what I needed and gave me the costing. I decided to go ahead with the procedure. I saw her again at Benijofar when I went for my pre-op checks, which included heart check, bloods etc.
I was also given an appointment with the anaesthetist at Medimar Hospital in Alicante. The directions looked direct enough via the N332; however, the road outside the hospital was extremely busy with no entry streets. We learned that turning right at the lights before the hospital took us behind the hospital to a very quiet road and easy entrance to the hospital. I do think the direction to the hospital could be improved and be more specific.
The hospital staff at the reception desk for the anaesthetist could have been friendlier and the advert for the Medcare clinic being aimed at British expats is misleading as I found the hospital staff very reluctant to speak English and they forced an interpreter on me. The anaesthetist spoke to me in English, but wondered why I couldn’t speak Spanish. Not a good start at the hospital!
I saw Dr Bernabeu again before my operation and had my pre-op pictures taken. At this point I also had all the relevant paperwork to read and sign ready for my operation.
On the day of my operation I was shown to a lovely room with lovely views of the castle and the sea. My op went really well. I was awake by early evening and pain free with all the medications administered very efficiently the whole time I was there.
Dr Bernabeu came to see me again the next day and the following day before I got discharged.

Once home I was able to move around slowly and had to take it easy. The medication (paracetamol) has kept me virtually pain free with only a little discomfort.
Apart from the initial disappointment with the desk staff at the hospital I would highly recommend the service and the extremely high standard of skill from Dr Bernabeu and the commitment of the nurses.
I am now 10 days after my operation and am feeling well. Everything seems to be healing so far. I will have my stitches out soon (three weeks after my op).
I am extremely pleased with the attention that I’ve had from the staff at Medcare clinic, Benijofar. I have no reservations whatsoever in recommending Medcare clinic to everyone.

Obviously we don’t have control over all the staff at the hospital but have generally found them to be very good, so we were disappointed that she had problems due to language with desk staff. We are looking into this and will see if it can be improved.
