adult braces

If you are asking the question – Am I too old for braces? – the answer is no.

Orthodontic treatment (braces for tooth straightening) is no longer just for children or teenagers. More and more adults choose this option routinely to improve not only their smile but their whole facial appearance.

Treatments have advanced way beyond the simple bit of wire and plastic plate many adults may remember. New techniques work better and faster, giving excellent results that can improve the whole appearance of the face.  And, it is because the technology is now so much better, that age is no longer a barrier to having straighter teeth.

Who is having orthodontics?

Adults in their twenties, thirties, forties or even older are deciding to get their teeth straightened.

Rocio, our orthodontist says: “I am seeing lots of adults who want straighter teeth. We routinely straighten children’s teeth but lots of adults missed out when they were kids because methods were not so good, or they were just not given the option. But now they don’t have to put up with crooked or protruding teeth.”

And, Rocio explains that teeth straightening, at any age, has more benefits than purely cosmetic.

“If teeth are badly positioned it will be harder to chew food, which can mean that some teeth are put at risk because they are doing more work than they should, or joints or muscles may be put under pressure and be adversely affected.”

Do I have to have metal braces?

Understandably, some people don’t want braces that show. If you are not happy with metal braces there are now much more discreet options.

What does orthodontic treatment involve?

The first steps include x-rays and impressions for study models. The orthodontic specialist will then undertake an orthodontic study to assess what kind of treatment, appliances and materials should be used and for how long. Once this has been agreed and the treatment started there will normally be monthly appointments for the duration of the treatment.

Does it hurt?

Orthodontic Treatment isn’t painful but can be uncomfortable when the appliances are first adjusted, in the same way as a new shoe might rub.

Is it expensive?

Orthodontic treatments will be different for everyone, with options to agreed based on requirements and preferences. This is why we offer a free initial consultation with our orthodontic specialist who can advise what is best for you and give you an estimate of costs and the length of time the treatment is likely to take.
