Mirror, mirror on the wall... as we look in the mirror we wonder where our once plump lips and cheeks have disappeared to, and if only… we wonder exactly when and how those lines appeared around our eyes, mouth and forehead.

We are all aware that external factors such as the sun, pollution and smoking play a big role in how we age, but so too are hormones, genes and a diminishing skin structure.

Why me?

Depleting levels of elements such as Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Collagen result in loss of moisture, volume, tone and elasticity of the skin. By the age of 50, we have less than half the amount we had in youth. The first and most noticeable lines are the nasolabial folds, running from nose to corners of mouth, and these tend to give us that ‘unhappy’ or ‘sad’ look. Also noticeable is the loss of volume in our cheeks which can leave them looking hollow and sunken. Pouts too are affected by their loss of volume and firmness leaving us with thinner, less well defined lips.

So you see, as with everything else in life, the ageing process too is multi-factorial and complicated. Whilst it is rather difficult to turn back the clock as we would like to, there are however some very effective ways of improving and enhancing our appearance.

While wrinkle-relaxing treatments, also known as BOTOX or lunch-hour facelifts in Hollywood, are being used on forehead areas to smooth out lines. Fillers are being used on other areas of the face to even out lines and creases and improve the facial contour whilst plumping back lips to former glory!

What is Botox?

BOTOX is a purified protein that is injected into the areas needing treatment; the result is that nerve impulse transmission is interrupted, muscle contraction is prevented and so the area treated becomes smooth and crease free.

About fillers

With fillers, two of the most widely used products are Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Collagen. HA keeps your skin moisturised and improves elasticity through its amazing capacity to hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water; Mother Nature’s own inbuilt moisturiser if you like. It is available for treatment in injectable gel form to fill in and smooth out lines.

HA and Collagen are both part of the skin’s natural cellular structure, with collagen integral in the structure itself giving it strength and resilience. They both play different and essential roles in maintaining the natural vitality of skin and are hence often used together to achieve the soft, subtle results you will want.
